Mark Wahlberg confirmed in an interview for MTV that he is going to star as Nathan Drake in the upcoming adaptation of the Uncharted games. He will be playing in David O’ Russel’s movie alongside with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci who have been offered to play Drake’s father and uncle respectively.
Let’s a few disclaimers out of the way first. I think Mark Wahlberg is a fantastic actor. Just look at Three Kings and The Departed where he played his parts fantastically. The man definitely knows what he’s doing and I hope that he gets some more parts like those.
Robert DeNiro is a legend, nothing more to add to that. Joe Pesci is … well, Joe Pesci. Nothing wrong with, but hey.
With that out of the way, I can now safely say: buddy politics much? Mark Wahlberg is horribly miscast as Nathan Drake. Having him play this character in this stage of his career is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes that the director has ever made. It’s like Jim Carrey suddenly playing a serious character in The Number 23. It was just … alien. Yeah, he managed to pull of the character, but that entire performance was downplayed by the fact that it was just so weird. Right now I’m having a hard time believing that Marky Mark can even play the funnyman hero.
I am man enough to admit that 90% of this feeling I have is because of the fact that Wahlberg grabbed this part from under Nathan Fillion’s nose. Nathan.Fucking.Fillion. Now there we have one of the greatest actors of our geek culture who fits the bill absolutely brilliant. All you needed to see to be convinced is the Firefly TV series and the Serenity movie. There he plays a character very similar to Drake. A character who is to this day remembered as one of the best characters in Sci-Fi history. And not that Fillion didn’t want the part, he had even started a twitter campaign to get the part.
Oh and Robert DeNiro as the father? Would it really have been so hard to get Bruce Campbell to be Sully? I get it, you need a star studded cast for this one. But Bruce Campbell and Nathan Fillion can carry this entire movie if they had to.
