One of the newest rumors on the mill is that a next installment in the Gears of War franchise will be compatible with the Microsoft Kinect.
It’s no secret when I say that the Kinect is currently a very hot item in the stores, selling well over a million units in just ten days. Reviews for the Kinect are quite mixed at the moment, with big companies claiming it’s a fantastic new piece of technology whilst other reviews are saying it’s a cool gadget that’s sadly overpriced. Not helping the matter is the fact that the lineup in games is very similar to that which is found on the Wii. Meaning, nothing much for the hardcore gamer.
According to the rumor, Microsoft is getting ready to announce some new Kinect titles at the Spike TV Videogame Awards including a Kinect rendition of Gears of War. The rumor also claims that said title will be the headliner for the announced games.
Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s design director, has tweeted that Gears of War 3 will not be coming to the Kinect. Which falls in line with what he said earlier, that he thinks of the violence in his games as being slapstick. However, the rumor states that there will be a Gears of War on the Kinect, not that it will be the third installment in the franchise. So it might very well be possible that we are going to see this happen.
Whilst I think that this might just be what the Kinect needed, I also think that this will not end very well. Gears of War is a franchise about manly men doing manly things like curb stomping enemies, fist bumping with friends, Hoo-ah’ing and slicing up your enemies with a chainsaw attached to a machine gun. The media and the politicians are already coming hard on Videogames for various reasons and this will only end up antagonizing them further. With the media being able to twist and turn anything to make controversy, I highly doubt that they will let this opportunity slide. They will see people use said machine gun by motioning with their hands like they were actually doing it. They will see people stomp their foot on the ground as if they were really doing that to the enemy’s head.
Various news reporting websites have sent out requests for additional information. Epic Games hasn’t responded yet whilst Microsoft gave the familiar: "we can't comment on rumor or speculation."

I don't know how this would work out, but having the option to play Gears with the Kinect rather than being something completely mandatory is going to be interesting. It might be good for a few laughs or it could end up making the gamers kill each other out of frustration. lol

ReplyDeleteI think it should be a family co-op game. The parent grabs the kid and waves him around, accordingly with the tagline "you are the chainsaw!"
