SOPA vs the World - Victories all around

Photobucket

As an earlier article stated, the ESA supported the highly controversial bill known as SOPA. As the unofficial voice of the gaming industry, the ESA was therefor bombarded by the people of the internet, and of the gaming community, to kindly discontinue their support. And, so you request, you shall receive.

Kotaku, among others, report that they have officially dropped their support. They saw the light and have joined the people on the good side of the force.

Not only that, but Sopa has been shelved indefinitely. Representative Lamar Smith, author of the SOPA bill, came out with this information and had this to say:

"I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy. It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products."

Though these are all tremendous victories, I would like to take note that there are still threats out there. PIPA might be shelved as well, but it is still a viable threat. And, even though SOPA is shelved, the changes that will be made might not be a vast improvement over the original.

Stay vigilant, troopers. The war isn't over yet.
