Young Justice Invasion: Earthlings review

Geen naam

The second season of Young Justice kicked off to a rather rocky start. Whilst keeping the standards of last season standing, it also managed to overwhelm us with new story elements and new characters. The time jump was welcomed, and hated. Did the second episode managed to make up for that episode?

This episode, we follow the Squad that was sent through the Zeta tubes alongside doctor Adam Strange. Sent to the planet Rann, our heroes are there to figure out what happened to the Justice League Six's missing hours and why the Kroletheans are invading Earth because of it.
The story of the episode itself falls right back in to why the previous season was such a success for me. It's a simple, yet effective story that's a part of something much bigger. Whilst, at the same time, doing well as a story on its own.
However, that is not where the true strength of this episode lies. It lied with the characters. This time around, the story revolved around the Squad sent to Rann, meaning we get to see actual character development, and exposition to development pre-Invasion and Post-Season 1.
The animation this episode was up the usual standards, though I have to applaud the transformations made by Beast Boy. Rann itself is a beautiful planet, and the aliens all have a rather unique feel to them. Instead of being a rip-off of an Alien or a Predator or something.
Voice acting wise, I have to give credit to the actors for speaking the Rannian language like it's their primary one. Plus, switching between languages like that is rather impressive as well, if there wasn't editing magic involved at least.

Now on to some more spoilerific discussions. It's some pretty major spoilers, so you might want to skip to after the closing spoilers tag.

SPOILERS

Right, so the three members of the Team that were sent to Rann were Megan, Connor and Beast Boy. We finally get to understand the situation between Megan and Connor. Whilst it isn't exactly an original storyline to follow, the relationship between them has the potential of making it even more so.
Most importantly however, we have Beast Boy. And by god, was it great to find out who exactly this kid really was. Remember last season, when the Team was sent to Africa and Megan was forced to donate blood. To the son of the woman that played Megan. Remember their names? Yeah, I didn't make the connection either. Until now. Beast Boy's morphing abilities are because he's half martian.
Plus, the relationship between him and Megan is fun to watch, as Megan has become his adopted sister.

I think these twists are absolutely great, and shows that there is a lot of potential for the rest of the season.

/SPOILERS

Overall, a very effective episode. And, if the rest of the season is this great, I can definitely see this season being even better than the first one.

Now, if only we get to find out about Wally and Artemis next episode!
