The Future is Black

The Future is Black

Every year we see the release of a game in the Call of Duty franchise. Whilst the studio alternates each year between Treyarch and Infinity Ward, people are starting to get a little bit tired of said franchise. Still, that's not stopping the publishers, as we have recently been informed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is set to be released this year by Treyarch.

Games are supposed to be about two things. One is immersion, whilst the other is fun. Sometimes, games are more immersing than fun. Whilst others are more fun than immersing.
The Call of Duty franchise has been called many things as of late. That they are trying to emulate blockbuster movies, and that there is nothing to these games in both single player as multiplayer. But, here's the deal, CoD games are bundles of fun. I feel that people are reading waaaaay too much in to this franchise, and that they just need to learn how to be kids again, who are seeing Power Rangers for the first time. It's silly fun and I hope to christ that this never changes.

"BUT PUDDLE, WAR GAMEZ ARE TEH SRS BSNS!" No, they are not. Realistic shooters like Modern Warfare aren't allowed to be fun, it seems. All people want is for them to be as realistic and as serious as possible. I say they are dead wrong. We need more shooters like Call of Duty, and it will be a sad day when they too go the path of Medal of Honor and Battlefield.

Whilst playing Modern Warfare 3, I couldn't help but having a goofy smile on my face. All the way through, I found it to be an extremely fun joyride. Save for a few moments, that should be obvious for those who have played that game. Whilst the multiplayer didn't quite get that fun factor down, and needed to add a few more things to make it complete, it was still everything I expected it to be. It was fast, brutal and fun where anything could happen.

Enter Black Ops 2, a game that looks to be as silly and fun as Modern Warfare 3, hopefully bringing along it's still highly praised multiplayer with it. Games like this should never win Game of the Year awards. Like Michael Bay's Bad Boys 2, this franchise is awesome and fun. And that's it.

And as far as the "rivalry" between Battlefield, CoD and Medal of Honor goes ... give it a bloody rest. Take these games for what they are, and judge them as such. If you want a good comparison, I'll give you one. Battlefield and Call of Duty are both Miami Vice. Though Battlefield is more the 2009 movie whilst Call of Duty is more the TV series. (In tone, not quality)

And with that... Black Ops 2, ladies and gentlemen!

  1. this series has been going downhill since the first Modern warfare. I loved that game, and liked each sequel a bit less. I was actually satisfied with Black Ops, but MW3 is trash.
