Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010: Sony Conference

E3 2010
Sony Conference

As the big 3 come to a close, it’s safe to say that everything rests on Sony’s shoulders. Will this years E3 be mediocre because of its conferences? Even with a great one from EA and a stellar one from Nintendo. Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s find out.

Sony Conference kicks off with some footage from the crowd and from the footage they are showing on the three screens. It looks like it’s the same setup as last year. Cool beans. Plus there’s a joke in there with that annoying guy from the Playstation 3 consoles. What’s his name.

And we’re off! Jack Tretton starts off the show with a few cool jokes and a welcome towards us. You’re welcome, Jack. The speech he gives is about what they envisioned for the console at the E3 of four years ago. He then gives the floor to Kaz Hirai who gives another speech about what they were and are planning. One thing they’re planning involves 3D. Yay, just what we need. /Sarcasm. He talks about the new Sony Bravia’s that are 3D ready and he talks about the fact that there are already game titles like Stardust that can be played using that technology.  Who cares? 3D is a gimmick. A trend that will soon pass. Please don’t keep yacking on it like Microsoft did with Kine … wait … Killzone 3 talk? I <3 3D!

Herman Hulst is premiering footage of Killzone 3! WHOO! It looks like Killzone and it looks like you’re fighting that flying chick boss from Metal Gear Solid 4. Good news is that you’re flying a jetpack whilst gunning shit down. Now that’s what I call multitasking. Plus, it’s compatible with Playstation Move. But yeah, it’s Killzone 2.5 with 3D and Move functionality. Still, a remarkable upgrade but … it’s a gimmick upgrade. It’s released in Februari 2011.

Hirai then continues on to announce Gran Turismo 5 which will also be in 3D. There’s also Mortal Kombat, Crysis 2, Tron Evolution, NBA 2k11. All in 3D. He also says that the Move will also have games like Fight: Light’s out and more.
He ends with one last 3D video showcasing games that will be available on 3D. Of course, us at home can’t see it in 3D but the audience is surely getting a kick out of this. Also, I saw a new Sly Raccoon game there. The new Mortal Kombat game looks amazing as well. Back to the roots like it should be.
Hey Microsoft, notice how didn’t stretch this for sixty minutes.

Tretton is back and tells us that there’s some anniversaries, including the tenth one for the Playstation 2. He’s also saying how people are starting to appreciate the added value of the PS3 in their home for recording TV shows and watch movies. From there he segways in to the Playstation Move and how they envisioned it to be like that, that they wanted it to be an added value.

Hey Pete. Pete’s on to tell us about the move. Say hi to Pete. He’s explaining that the Move is like the Wii’s controller, only more precise and different when it comes to detecting the controller and its movements. Following this is another video showing us people behind the Playstation Move that tell us how it works, why it works and why they wanted it to work. For me it’s very interesting to listen to as I love to hear this stuff. At least they’re keeping it quick and interesting. It doesn’t feel all that stretched. But basically they are mashing years of Nintendo commercials and propaganda in to one video.
Pete says that in the video, mister what’s his name said that it was important to note that the move had buttons. Unlike the Ki … Natal. ZING.
He also says that they can put the next Socom on one disc. Meaning both the controller version and the Move version can be on one disc. Again, very interesting. Luckily he’s now about to reveal new games! As in NEW! WHOO!

Unfortunately it get’s rather choppy after that. The feed, you know.  The game he’s showing is called Sorcery, a Move game. I had to switch to another site for this stream so I missed the introduction. But basically it’s a Harry Potter meets Dragon Age game. Including radial wheel for spells and potions and the like. Although I have to admit that it looks smooth. Also, the graphics look amazing. If you compare it to previous motion controlled games. It’s kinda weird to see one with good graphics. Also, there’s an ugly fucking beast tearing down vitally important structures and the cave isn’t collapsing.
Funny thing, Pete said that we’ve never seen menu’s like that before. As I said: DRAGON AGE.

Up next, EA sports for Move. Guys, this’d better lead somewhere awesome. Please. Okay, so they’re showing a new Tiger Woods game with the Move. I mean, come on, you’ve already seen this at the E3 conferences of Nintendo in the previous years. Only it was with crappy graphics and annoying Mii’s. Bah, again, it looks smooth and it seems to be working like a charm. But … Gawd. Let’s go back a couple of paragraphs here: Hey “Microsoft, notice how didn’t stretch this for sixty minutes.” I apologize, Microsoft. Seriously, think of your audience, guys. We already know! Seriously, we already saw it at Nintendo’s conferences of the previous years and so did the reporters and so did the investors. Seriously!

Then came Heroes on the Move. A game on the Move starring Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter and Sly and the Gang. No, seriously. No, … Seriously. I CAME BUCKETS, I SHAT BRICKS, I FUCKING YEEEEEEE-HA’D! IN.THE.SAME.GAME. Against each other! SERIOUSLY! WHOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo- ooh …

Hehehe, ahem.

Then he announces an ad deal with Coca Cola to feature their games on the Coca Cola products. Nice move. Scratch that. Brilliant move.

ZOMG It’s … what’s his na … Oh, Kevin Butler. The man is my new hero. Jokes, focusing on games. He sure knows how to rile up a crowd. Plus, he’s born to be an entertainer. His speech comes to a climax as a glorious song accompanies his riling speech that is already amongst the greatest ever. Leonidas, Obama, Martin Luther King jr, Kevin Butler.
But wait, didn’t he say he was gonna focus on games? So then why is he going off stage? STOP TALKING ABOUT THE MOVE. Oh, a release date. In September. It’ll cost about 70 bucks. The PS3 sports champions bundle will cost  99 bucks and 300 more bucks for the bundle with the Trey itself. Plus there’s also update patches for already existing games that will allow us to play these games with Move like Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, Ruse and Toy Story 3. And before he gives it back to Jack, he shows another Move video. LET IT END. Still, nice prices. Very nice indeed. Not too expensive.

Heroes on the move <3

Tretton returns with another speech. By now, they should have dropped the speeches and just show shit. In comes the PSP talk and a very funny video with Kevin Butler that’s the new ad for the handheld. And then another one … Right, keep it at one, guys. The new PSP kid is cool, but not great. Needs moar Kevin Butler.
Talks about games like MGS: Peace walker, Invizimals (title hurts me physically.) and God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Of which we get a trailer. Nothing fancy though. More games like Ace Combat, Kingdom Hearts Birth by sleep, Tron Legacy and the aforementioned. The aforementioned will be bundled with a PSP as well. Again, who the fuck cares. We already knew these were coming and we knew damned sure they were going to be bu … KNOCK IT OFF WITH THE POINTLESS MOVIES ALREADY.

Heroes on the move <3 Did I mention I like it?

Tretton keeps on yapping about the PSP by the way. And PSN stats as well on how it doubled and what not. Might as well give you something exiting as he’s babbling on and on and on. I saw Parasite Eve 3 in that video I mentioned last. Oh hey, yay, they recreated their E3 booth in PS Home. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. /sarcasm.

FINALLY, I hear the word Content. Show me some fucking games now, man. SHOW. ME. THE. MONA … euh, GAMES… … … … Blah blah blah Little Big planet blah blah … wait. LBP? Oh, cool! Mod Nation Racers is then mentioned. Okay, this is going somewhere.
I knew it, they’re showing Little Big Planet 2 now. Although, once again, we already know all this, it’s still exiting to actually see something that’s a game on the main console. It all feels like it should be like the Sims. Expansions. And not a full blown game.

Moving on, Tretton says that PSN will stay the same and free but that PSN Plus will cost 50 bucks and will have exclusive deals and content that can not be found on PSN Free. In other words, it’s nothing fancy. It’s just a nice bonus. I’m thrilled however that PSN will stay free. Trophy Whore: WINS.
I think he’s finally going somewhere now. The man is starting to hype up for big content. He’s mentioning EA and say they’re provi … ding … A sports game …? No, wait, they’re just going to let an EA rep talk about what they have in store. Thank god.

Rep reveals more about the game with exclusive PS3 content: Medal of Honor. Multiplayer was already seen in the EA conference but they’re there to talk about the single player. He says that MoH sticks close to their goals for keeping it realistic by taking advice from real life soldiers.
Enter Deuce, a new character in the game first introduced here. ENTER OBVIOUS JOKE HERE. The trailer they showed was intense, in a movie way. Also, a series of videos will be released that have the actual Tier One operatives talk about their experiences. Pretty dang sweet. Dice will also have unlockable beards in multiplayer. WHOOO! Beards! Manly beards for manly men.
The multiplayer trailer they showed looked amazing. It’s like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with Battlefield: Bad Company esque controls. The Limited Edition on the PS3 will also have, for free, Medal of Honor Frontline.

Next up is Dead Space 2 with a live demo. It looks like it’s Resident Evil 4 set in Dead Space. The first thing they show is Jump scare and for the rest it’s action. No horror to be found really. Very disappointing. Sure, there’s gore and jump scares and whatnot. But that’s not horror. At least the graphics have vastly improved over the previous installment. The limited Edition will be PS3 exclusive and will be Move-able.

ATTN SONY: Announce something new plox. Kthxbai. I mean come o

PORTAL 2! FINALLY! WHOO! Portal 2 is announced for the Playstation 3. I only just finished Portal via Steam and now this. I’m shedding tears of joy. Gabe Newell says that the PS3 version will be the best version of the game. The trailer was short, sweet and ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FANTASTIC. The best game ever will have a sequel in 2011!

Next up a trailer of Final Fantasy XVIX Online. It … still looks exactly like it did the last time … Up next is Mafia 2 and an announcement of exclusive day one DLC. He then continues with Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and how it has exclusive levels for the PS3 and that the beta will be PS3 exclusive as well. AND … what? Multiplayer video for ACB? It looks cool. The characters seem to have real Ninja abilities like changing appearance, disappearing and more. The graphics look odd, somehow, but still good in the end. They really skim all this. And again, another quick video of the content that’s coming. Seriously? A quick video. Lordy, no.

Following this is a Gran Turismo 5 video. But, do we even care anymore at this point in the conference? At least it’s pretty to look at. Also, released November 2nd. In THREE DEEEEEEEEE.

Is it over yet? Oh come on, what’s next?

InFAMOUS 2. I see. This oughta be go … who the fuck is that guy? Cole? No … Nawwwwwww … Well, besides the fact he doesn’t look anything like Cole or sounds like him (new voice actor, yeah yeah.) It still looks absofuckinglutely amazing. Plus, Cole had a sword in that trailer. Now here’s something I’ve been waiting for. And it delivers, folks. This trailer, go check it out now and be amazed. Plus, the bosses seem to be a lot more inspired this time. Because I saw one big assed motherfucker that would give Godzilla a run for his money. That’s all I can say really because you have to see this one for yourself.

Lastly, they had one more surprise for us. It begins as a live action video of some cab drivers talking about a franchise ending with them driving away and the guy tossing out a cigar. Who picks up the cigar? Well, the clown from … Twisted Metal. Ah, yes, they’re back. Looks like an HD version of a Playstation 2 game. But who cares. It’s Twisted Metal! Everything we would have wanted from a game bearing this title. At it’s core it’s nothing fancy. Sure, there’s helicopters, bikes and cars … but, meh. Fan service at the most and maybe awesome enough to draw in a new crowd. My opinion anyways. Never been anything more but rental worthy for me. Still, I rented it a LOT.

Final Verdict:
In the end, this conference is a solid 6.5/10. It had some cool games (<3 Heroes on the Move. InFAMOUS 2! WHOOOO!) but in the end they just stepped short. Too many things we already knew and once again dragging out the gimmicks for way too long.

Final Recap:

Microsoft comes in last with. Followed by Sony who and then by the undeniable winner: Nintendo. Congratulations. As a last note, Ubisoft is really last and EA sits between Sony and Microsoft. But, seeing as this is about the Big 3 …

Thank you all for reading and Thank you screwattack.com for featuring my Nintendo blog on the community spotlight.

Bah, no new Jak and Daxter so far. Here’s to hoping!
