The House of Gohda, currently led by Daimyo Matsunoshin Gohda, has been protected, and continues to be so, by the Azuma Ninja Clan. The Azuma Clan was once ruled by Azuma Shiunsai. During the events of the Burning Dawn War, he let his life and was followed by young Rikimaru, who in the years grew to truly be a Master Ninja
Rikimaru was responsible for ending the Burning Dawn War, by killing the woman leading the organization. After which, he received the great ninja sword:Izayoi.
Years passed and Rikimaru was sent on a mission. There he encountered a man called Onikage, who he previously met as being Suzaku. Onikage was working for the lord of the underworld, Lord Mei-Oh, who he killed. Though not without sacrificing himself afterwards to save his fellow ninja and a member of the Gohda estate.
Rikimaru returned to the realm of the living many years later (actually being trapped in a portal created by Mei-Oh), and found himself facing off against Tenrai, an evil warlock. And also, his former nemesis of Onikage. Both of whom he defeated.
Onikage once again returns many years later, aiming to start a war. He sways Gohda's counselor, Sekiya, to his side and thus manages to kidnap Princess Kiku, Gohda's daughter. At the end, Sekiya is revealed to be Onikage. He forced Rikimaru to lunge his blade through Kiku in order to kill him.
Whilst I count fellow Tenchu character Tatsumaru as being of my favorite characters of all time, I still say that Rikimaru is one badass motherfucker himself. By far the best Ninja in gaming history.
