Ubisoft calls out industry

 Ubisoft calls out industry

CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, seems to be a man with a rather unheard of opinion so far. In an interview with MCV, mister Guillemot said that these consoles have outstayed their welcome. The current generation of consoles being that of the PS3 and the 360 are ruining a lot of chances for new I.P.'s because of the fact that people prefer established brands instead of new ones.

"It is part of the DNA of the company. Each time there is new hardware it gives our creative teams more freedom and they don’t have to follow the same rules. They can try new things because the consumer expects and wants new things."

With the arrival of a new format, developers get excited and want to see what they can do with it and wish to see just how far that they can push its boundaries. It gets their creative juices flowing in a positive manner. Guillemot also had this to say about the current generation of consoles:

"Processors are more and more powerful, graphics cards have moved on, there are many technologies that would help us deliver a better experience and help the industry to grow."

Now, I agree that technology these days is far superior to that of when the Slim versions were released. I think that if you release new consoles with the latest tech today, that they will be obsolete in one or two months time. But that is not what's important about this. The man is clearly saying that the developers need a new toy to play with to get their mojo back. What I find funny is that he inadvertently puts the blame on the developers. Because that is where the flaw lies these days. The lack of new and innovative I.P. isn't due to the fact that there hasn't been a new generation of consoles, but it's because the developers are stuck in a rut.
That is not the customer's problem or the problem of the console makers. People are always wary when it comes to something new. Some people like it that way, to face something new, but this is an industry of money. It costs money to make, it costs money to buy. And if that is the case, then people will hold on to their money carefully unless you give them a damn good reason. Unfortunately, new I.P.'s these days have been rather lackluster. For every Bulletstorm, one sees three Alpha Protocols.
