E3 2011 - EA Conference

Photobucket

The second major conference of E3 was done by the guys of Electronic Arts. This is the coverage of said blog, with commentary from little ol’ me. Enjoy!

It all begins with a trailer shot in live action. News reports from all around the world show us that the Earth is under attack. Ladies and gentlemen, Mass Effect 3.
Casey Hudson joins us on stage to talk about the last installment in the epic franchise. He promises that this will cater to all audiences, from the people who have built their story from minute one and those that are just joining the franchise with that game. Everyone gets a conclusion.
From the looks of things, ME3 will be even more action oriented. It’s officially turned in to Gears of War, only with a fancy dialog system. This will split the fans of the game even further apart than they are today. Some will embrace the changes, but others will look back at ME1 and sigh at how low the franchise has fallen. I’m just hoping that it won’t be a snooze fest for a change.
Following this is a trailer called The Fall of Earth, a trailer hitting it home even more as it shows ME has indeed gone to Earth. Might be exactly what the franchise needed.

Rustello come on and builds up hype for a site called Origin.com. After this he continues in to a new Need for Speed game called The Run. He handed it over to another spokesman, Jason Delong, who announced that for the first time ever, the player will be able to go on foot. Unfortunately it’s a la The Bourne Conspiracy and you’re in for a Quick Time Event of a lifetime! It looks exciting though, but might not be that for playing.

Coming next is Zeshuk, presenting us with Star Wars: The Old Republic. Following a very PR heavy sales pitch speech, we see another CGI trailer that really does nothing at all anymore. We’ve already seen this for several years now. A damned shame.

Wait, what’s this? Beautiful mountains? Snow? A crashed plane? THIS CAN ONLY BE ONE THING! HERE IT CO- Snowboarders? Oh, SSX. Cool beans! I used to play the demo of an old SSX all the time. It’s fun for a few plays, but nothing more. So not even this impressive CGI trailer can convince me it’s anything but meh. But, I think this might be fun for fans.

Peter Moore then comes on stage and continues to talk about SSX for a few more moments. After this he moves in to another sports game, namely Fifa ‘12. My first response was nothing positive. But, as it stands, I’m really, really impressed. After a quick but shoddy beginning by mentioning that they’re running on a new engine, Moore quickly turns the tables by saying that Fifa is changing. New gameplay elements will be introduced that will fundamentally change how you play the game. And not just superficial like previous installments, but changes that will make you play strategically and more. Not only that, but he also announced EA Football Club, which basically does what every installment has done before. It automatically updates your game, on all of your Fifa games on all platforms. THIS, is a game changer of immense magnitude for sports games.

Moving on to Football now. (HA!) An uninspired and boring trailer is followed by the appearance  of a couple of American Football Celebs that go in to a way to long hype speech. This is the low point of the show. And luckily it’s over pretty fast.

Rustello is back with a new social networking game, namely a face book game called The Sims Social. He announced it by making fun of Farmville. RESPECT.

Next up is Reckoning. The new spokesman makes high claims that the men behind the game are of the highest ranks of their field as they are highly acclaimed all over the place. Unfortunately, what they showed is nothing more than a generic fantasy RPG with a lot of promise to be more. What we need is a lot more info before we can make an accurate view of the game.

Following this is by far the best game of the conference. It’s a game by Insomniac, an already highly valued developer. The game will be on both the PS3 and the 360. It’s name? OverStrike. Prince introduces us verbally to the characters of the game. By the sound, and look of things, they’re a mishmash of people as seen in Killzone 1, only with differences of course. From the trailer that followed, we can gather that the game has the usual Insomniac humor, but that it’s more realistically looking, and amazing looking as well. It’s also very thrilling to behold, the trailer. In total there are 4 agents in the near future that blow shit the fuck up. Definitely a game to watch.

Lastly we have a demo of Battlefield 3, using it’s astounding new engine, the Frostbite 2 engine. Yes, the graphics are the best I’ve ever seen. No, that doesn’t mean that Battlefield 3 is interesting in the slightest. What they showed is unbelievably underwhelming, though it does get the point across that Frostbite is amazing.

Sidenote: I have no idea how you spell Rustello’s name. I tried googling it, binging it and more. Nada. I’ll correct this in my E3 wrap-up blog or in an update blog.
