Pokémon JC: Chapter Two

Chapter Two

As the first night of Adam’s adventure progressed, the sky turned cloudless. In its stead came thousands upon thousands of stars that shined brightly in the dark sky, dancing around a large, full moon which illuminated the earth beneath it. Everything under its domain was fast asleep, including Adam who was sleeping peacefully next to Pichu.
After a long day of walking, they had decided to take a rest. They did so by sitting with their backs against a great, certainly old tree. So they sat there, watching by as the day turned in to night. Enjoying each other’s company, they sat there quietly. Not a single word was spoken until they finally said goodnight.
Pichu might have been sleeping peacefully, but Adam had been mumbling and churning all night long. His dreams had been filled with nothing but nightmares about his days to come. Not once in his entire life had he been so secluded from family and friends, and so he kept on dreaming of being all alone, on the road to a place he hadn’t been to before.
These dreams did not last long, however, as Adam suddenly found himself standing on a small island in the middle of an ocean. Nothing but water surrounded him and the small patch of land he stood on wasn’t even large enough to sit down on.
‘Are you really alone?’ A voice echoed in the wind as if it was coming from afar. Yet Adam understood it perfectly. ‘Think, young one, and the answer will come. Are. You. Alone?’
‘No.’ Adam said, thinking of Pichu and the five Pokéballs he had with him. The patch of land he stood on started to grow around him, being filled with all kinds of Pokémon who appeared out of thin air. But most prominent of all stood Pichu, proudly by his side and with sparks coming out of the pink cushions on its cheek. ‘No, I am not alone!’ He yelled, followed by all the Pokémon roaring out, cheering Adam on.
‘Yes, you will do.’ The voice in the wind then said. ‘You’ll do just fine. Now wake up to a brand new day.’ Adam felt a jolt of energy rush through his body, causing him to wake up from his sleep. The sudden rush of energy had him sitting upright very fast, opening his eyes expecting to see a monster standing in front of him. Instead of one, he saw something in the bushes ahead of him. In the light of the rising sun, Adam could see that it was a Pokémon. Floating around the larger Pokémon was a smaller one, that seemed to be a smaller version of that larger one. From the small bit of light that managed to hit the Pokémon’s bodies, Adam could see that the larger one had a purple skin.
Not quite sure what to think of this, Adam rubbed his eyes, thinking that it was just his imagination. When he opened them again, the Pokémon were indeed gone. Maybe it was just a remnant of his dreams. What exactly those dreams were, he didn’t know. He wanted to know, but like water in the palm of your hand, the dreams eluded him.
‘What was that?’ He asked himself.
‘Pi?’ Pichu opened its eyes at the sound of Adam’s voice, yawning widely right after that.
‘Oh, sorry, Pichu. I didn’t mean to wake you. Just that I thought I saw something.’ Instead of being irritated, Pichu rose up and listened carefully to the sounds in the wind and beyond. Hearing nothing in particular, Pichu sat back down and starting combing its fur, causing a slight electrical current to run over its body.
‘Piiiiii.’ Pichu seemed to be enjoying the sensation and stretched its limbs after it was done. Having gone through its morning routine, the Pichu lied back down and relaxed.
‘Hey, Pichu, there’s a Pokémon Center nearby. We can rest there for a while.’ Adam said. Hearing this, Pichu jumped right up and took a few steps towards where they were heading the day before.
‘Pi-Pichu!’ It said enthusiastically. Adam smiled and reached to the back of his belt where he kept his Pokéballs. Lying his finger on the correct ball, he hesitated for a moment. The dream he had last might have been long forgotten, but the dreams of before still partially lingered in his mind. Particularly the feeling of being alone. And so Adam decided to keep Pichu out of its ball, not wanting to be alone.
‘Come on, boy. Let’s go.’ He said, getting up himself and putting on his backpack. They had a long day ahead of them if they were going to get to that Pokémon Center in a decent hour. ‘Whoo!’ Adam yelled from the tip of his lungs once again and startled Pichu pretty badly. ‘Sorry …’ He then said, wondering why he kept opening his big, fat mouth like that.

Adam and Pichu quickly found themselves in a small patch of forest where there was only one path that went completely through it in one go. Unfortunately for them, that path had been a few hundred meters to their side. They noticed that not all paths lead to where they needed to go. In his infinite wisdom, Adam had been treating these paths like a maze, telling himself that as long as they stuck to the right, they would be A-OK.
Reality however, did not co-operate quite as well as Adam’s assumptions. Over an hour they had spent wandering the forest, whilst it was just half an hour to go through it. The longer it began to take, the more they started to think that maybe, just maybe, they might be in trouble.
For what seemed to be the ten thousandth time they turned right, ending up at a crossroads they had already traversed. Pichu pointed this out to Adam by jumping down from his shoulder and pointing to a set of footprints that were obviously Adam’s. Crouching down on his knees, Adam began to think that maybe he was thinking way too much about what happened when he woke up. Indeed, that had plagued his mind ever since then, and perhaps it had clouded his mind. Therefore he made a pact to himself to forget about it altogether and just move on with his life. No need to have a dream get in the way of everything.
‘You know, Pichu, if there were other Pokémon here, you could have asked them for directions. But there’s nobody here.’ Adam commented. Pichu nodded in agreement and wondered about that as well. This forest had been far too abandoned for its taste.
Right at that moment, Adam started to notice and intense growling coming from Pichu’s stomach.
‘Pichuuu.’ It said, feeling a bit embarrassed by the situation.
‘Feeling hungry, are you boy?’ Adam said, suddenly hearing his own stomach reply with a roar. ‘Let’s see what we can come up with.’ Having read a few survival books in the passed weeks, Adam had become quite aware of the various edible fruits and berries that could be found all over the world. Searching for food didn’t take long then and soon enough they had a small collection of edibles lying on a pile. ‘Dig in!’ Adam yelled, once again a tad too loudly. Pichu didn’t mind this time as it eagerly dug right in to the pile and pulled out one of its favorites.
A bush nearby suddenly started to move as a Pokémon lurking in it smelled the food spread out on the ground.
‘Pi-pi-pi.’ Pichu said towards whatever lied in wait in the bush. Patiently Adam played along, knowing that a Pokémon might be frightened of a trainer like him. To help Pichu convince it to come and eat, he quietly sat there and ate as slowly as possible.
‘Taillow!’ The Pokémon said, finally coming out of its hiding place. Slowly Adam reached for his back pocket and pulled out his Pokédex.
‘Taillow, the Tinyswallow Pokémon.’ The Pokédex stated after he had slid it open. On screen it portrayed a Taillow. It was a small, bird Pokémon with blue feathers and a white underbelly, also having patches of red feathers on its chest and forehead. At the end of its wings were elongated tips that made for better speed and maneuverability. The bottom of these wings also had white coloration. Other notable features were a short, yellow beak, black feet with yellow nails and two sharp tail feathers. ‘Taillow has a fierce personality.’ The Pokédex continued. ‘It never backs down, not even against the most powerful opponents.’
‘Nice to meet you, Taillow.’ Adam said, putting his Pokédex away. Strangely enough, the Taillow seemed to be completely ignoring both Adam as Pichu, paying much more attention to its surroundings. It responded vigilantly to every sound that it heard. Still, its hunger was greater than its fear and it cautiously stepped forward to take a bite out of the nearest piece of fruit.
Together they were enjoying a peaceful meal. Adam was eating most of it, whilst Pichu and Taillow both did their best. Of course, the Taillow was also busy looking around. Adam was wondering what the Taillow was so afraid of when it heard something in the distance, taking off pretty quickly to hide once more.
‘Pi-Pichu-piiiiii.’
‘I know, I’m wondering too.’ Adam packed up his things and Pichu jumped back on to his shoulder so that they could continue their journey to the Pokémon Center.

‘You know, Pichu, I think we might be lost.’ Adam said, another fifteen minutes later. Pichu sighed deeply as it walked alongside him. ‘Have you been hearing that buzzing as well?’ He then asked. It’s been several minutes now that he had noticed this constant buzzing. It was the kind of sound that could immensely irritate a person once they started paying attention to it. Strange was that the sound was moving further away at times, only to then get louder again. As if the cause of the buzzing was moving around.
‘Pi.’ Pichu nodded, twitching his ears.
‘Maybe it’s on the main road, let’s take a look!’ He yelled, again a bit too enthusiastically.
The duo made their way to the source of the buzzing sound, valiantly passing through many bushes that all had thorny branches for some odd reason. Though Pichu was smarter than Adam and just jumped over them. It turned out it wasn’t the main road. Not at all.
Nearing his destination, Adam tripped on an out sticking branch of a tree’s root and stumbled forward because of it. By the time he managed to get his balance back, he was out of air. Huffing and wheezing he leaned on his knees with his hands and tried to get his breath back. In the meantime, Pichu had come up to him and was pulling his pants, pointing to something. It was probably the source of the buzzing. Adam looked up and saw something he really didn’t want to see.
In the middle of a small field was a large tree. Mounted to the sides of this tree were many brown, shells that Adam recognized as being the Pokémon Kakuna. A quick check on his Pokédex affirmed this.
‘Kakuna, a transitional stage between Weedle and Beedrill. Kakunas remain inactive until they evolve into deadly Beedrill and hatch.’ Adam made the motion to retract the slide, only to find that the Pokédex wasn’t quite through. ‘Beedrill.’ It said, showing a yellow Pokémon with black stripes. A big bee, having only four legs, with two conical stingers. ‘This Pokémon is an evolved form of Weedle, following its Kakuna stage. Its sting is highly poisonous. A Beedrill is highly territorial. No one should ever approach its nest. If angered, they will attack in a furious swarm.’
‘Beedrill?’ Adam asked himself, not quite knowing why it showed him that. Pichu again pulled Adam’s pants. He looked down and saw that Pichu hadn’t been pointing to the Kakuna, but at something above it. Adam looked up.
‘AW, WHAAAA?’ He yelled, seeing the swarm of Beedrill buzzing around the tip of the tree in order to protect its kind.
‘Pichuuuuuu.’ Pichu sighed and braced himself for what was to come.
‘Run!’ Adam then yelled, taking off as fast as he could.  Not having any choice in the matter, Pichu followed him.
The duo didn’t make it very far, as one of the Beedrill launched an attack at Pichu. It’s stingers started to glow, where after it fired a barrage of needles towards Pichu, hitting it right in the back. Adam stopped and turned around to hear why Pichu cried out. Seeing it on the ground, trying its best to get back up, Adam became infuriated. Luckily, the Beedrill seemed to focus mostly on Pichu.
‘Pichu, thundershock!’
‘Pi!’ Pichu found the extra strength it needed and got back up. Right as it was charging up to obtain the required energy, another Beedrill launched an attack, this time coming at Pichu, stingers first.
‘Dodge!’ Pichu waited a few more seconds before leaping in to the air, right over the attacking Beedrill. Turning around in mid-air, Pichu finished charging.
‘Pichuuuuuuuuuuuu!’ The thundershock left its body and made its way towards the Beedrill. Striking goal, the Beedrill turned black and flew off using the remainder of its strength. Adam knew they couldn’t quite celebrate yet as there were still other Beedrill left. These ones however didn’t go after Pichu anymore. They went after Adam.
By gathering up all his dodgeball abilities, Adam started dodging the incoming Beedrill one by one, until one of them finally managed to tackle him. The impact rippled through his body, causing a severe amount of pain to be caused. Being tackled in to a tree didn’t help matters either.
‘Pi-pi-pi!’ Pichu came storming back in with a series of tackles that gave Adam some much needed breathing room. Using one of the tackles as a jumping boost, Pichu landed feet first on the trunk of a tree and then kicked off for a Quick Attack. One moment Pichu was there, whilst the other he turned in to a dash of bright, white light that struck one Beedrill, tossing it in to a bunch of its friends.
Adam got back up on his feet and saw the effort that Pichu was putting in. Feeling inspired, he drudged up all the knowledge about Pichu’s attacks and picked out a few of the low leveled ones to use. Unfortunately these weren’t much as Pichu was but a baby Pokémon.
‘Alright Pichu, dodge and use Tackle!’ One of the Beedrill had been hiding behind several of its friends and had only now come out to attack. Pichu had just bent its legs to get out of the way when the Beedrill picked up in speed and struck Pichu with one of its stingers, using a very powerful Fury Attack. ‘Pichu, no!’ Adam yelled. With Pichu recovering from the attack, Beedrill flew off so that its partners could launch a Pin Missile attack. Once again its stingers glowed white, followed by a great amount of white energy being shot towards Pichu. Adam knew that if he got in there, he would be hurt pretty badly, thus being of even littler help than before. All he could do was stand by and watch as Pichu got hit.
The energy of the Pin Missile attack gathered up around Pichu until it exploded in a fiery ball of power. Pichu was knocked towards Adam with intense speed and collided with his trainer, who too got knocked back. Again in to the tree.
For a short while, every ounce of energy seemed to have fleeted from Adam’s body. All that he wanted to do was just roll over and let the darkness take over, sleep and wake up to fight another day. However, the memory of an injured Pichu popped up in his mind, rejuvenating him just enough to wake up.
Adam opened his eyes and saw Pichu lying next to him on the ground. It was breathing quite heavily and it had various injuries all over its body. Why didn’t I tell Pichu to use Thundershock? Adam wondered over and over again.
The Beedrill were luckily nowhere to be seen, which didn’t mean much considering they were still rather lost.
‘Taillow!’ The hurting screech of Taillow reached Adam’s ears, sending a chill down his spine.
‘Pichu, are you alright?’ Adam asked.
‘Pi… Pi… Pi…’ Instead of saying that it was okay, Pichu merely nodded. Adam could see that Pichu was hurting by doing that action alone. It hurt him to have to leave Pichu like that, but Taillow needed him too. And it didn’t even came to his mind to put Pichu back in its Pokéball.
‘I gotta help Taillow. Okay, pal?’ Pichu looked up with worrying eyes, but didn’t do anything to prevent Adam from going. ‘I’ll be right back.’ Adam stood up, still feeling a bit shaky from the impact. He managed quite nicely to stay on his legs and ran as fast as he could towards the place where Taillow cried from.
A few meters later he passed a line of trees, winding up on the main road, Route A. There was no time to think about that. Instead, Adam looked around to see if Taillow was anywhere near there. And judging from the buzzing, it was somewhere to his left.
‘Taillow…’ This time it sounded pretty weak. The buzzing increased in volume and Taillow came crashing through a bush, straight on to the road. A larger swarm of Beedrill than before was racing towards Taillow, probably to harm it even more. Adam didn’t think twice to run towards Taillow. The distance between them was getting closer and closer, but so was that between it and them. Right as the first Beedrill came from beyond the tree line, Adam dove forward.
‘I got ya.’ He said as he grabbed Taillow and rolled forward. The Beedrill missed and stuck its stinger in the ground, getting stuck in the process.
‘Tai …’ The Taillow started to say, but it was to weak to continue.
‘Just hang on.’ Adam said to it in a calm fashion, even if his heart was absolutely racing faster than he was.
Unfortunately the Beedrill were very angry, launching yet another barrage of Pin Missiles, this time striking Adam in the back. This is it. He thought. The end of his glorious Pokémon career, ending with him getting lost in a forest and getting slammed by Beedrill.
‘Pi-Pichu!’ Pichu came running out of the bushes and ran straight for Adam. He could see that it was storing a massive amount of energy in its cheek that was eagerly awaiting to be released. Pichu came up to Adam and jumped up on its shoulder, kicking itself off. Turning his head, Adam could see Pichu releasing a Thundershock the likes he had never seen before, generating an energy field that even fried the fruit on nearby trees.
The Beedrill all got hit pretty badly and were suspended in mid-air as Pichu’s attack rushed through their bodies, causing all kinds of damage. And once Pichu was through they retreated back in to the forest.
Pichu landed on its feet, still breathing heavily. It turned its head towards Adam and was happy to see that both he as Taillow were alright, before it collapsed on to the ground.
Seeing Pichu collapse, Adam rushed over to it and placed Taillow by its side. Both of them were injured and needed to be treated as soon as possible.
‘Thank you, Pichu.’ Adam didn’t see how he could carry both Pokémon with him, so he took Pichu’s Pokéball in hand. ‘I’ll get you to a Center, don’t worry.’ Pichu winked at Adam, which caused him to shed tears. ‘I’m so sorry, Pichu. Return.’ A red ray of energy came from the Pokéball, turning Pichu in to energy as well so that it could go back in to the ball.
The sound of buzzing suddenly reached Adam. In fear he looked up, only to see a Beedrill lying on the ground, crispy black and buzzing probably it was in pain as well. Not seeing any other option, Adam took two more Pokéball. First one he tossed towards Beedrill. The ball hit its skin and transformed the Beedrill in to energy, which was transferred in to the open ball. Once it was closed, a red ring appeared around the white button. For a few moments the ball tossed and turned before the button turned red and locked in place. Then the ball flew back in to Adam’s hand, which he then placed back on to his belt.
‘And now for you, Taillow.’ He said, petting it. When he came close to its beak with his hand, the Taillow bit his finger ever so gently. Adam tapped Taillow with the ball. Once Taillow too was caught, he ran as fast as he could, hoping that he was running the right way. Because there should be a Pokémon center on the other side of the forest from where he came.

The winds had carried the large Wobbuffet hot air balloon out of the Starcraft City sky. Its occupants had let it drift slowly away as they carefully put together a plan. A plan that would certainly get them to furfill their goal.
Two people were sitting in the basket underneath the large, blue balloon, calculating every possible event that could transpire during their task. Considering their numerous failures all throughout their career, the two had decided that for once they should plan things ahead.
‘I think we got it.’ The man said.
‘You’d better be right, or there will be hell to pay.’ Was the woman’s reply. The man rubbed the back of his head, remembering the “hell to pay” she mentioned. That was something he could definitely live without.
‘Oh, we’ll do fine. Let’s just go.’

And so our young hero’s first trial has come and gone, resulting unfavorably for three Pokémon. Will our hero make it to the Pokémon Center in time? And who are these mysterious ballooners? Find out in the next chapter of Pokémon!
