Step up 3D review

Dance movies have always been something I tended to avoid like the plague. It was dance! For girls and queers. Nothing for me for I AM A MAYUNNNNNNN. HOO-AH and all that stuff. Rargh! Still, I was pretty interested to see the first movie after seeing the trailer for it. And, after I watched it, I was a fan of dance movies. There was a story, great dancing and more. What’s not to like? … Skinny, maybe, but that dude got shot anyways. NOOOOOOOOOO, not skinny! I shed a million tears … HA. Anyways, the sequel then soon came and whilst it wasn’t as good as the first one story wise and dance wise even, it was directed better.

Enter Step Up THREEEE DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I’ll say it quick and get it over with: Step Up 3D, whilst good, is the least of the three movies. They’re being “hip”. As in, trying to be cool whilst failing at it.

The story is about Moose who goes to New York to go to college. There he finds himself in a battle without wanting it, winning that battle and pissing off the wrong crowd. Fear not, for the leader of the House of Pirates saves his ass and brings him in to his “house”. Which is like a warehouse turned appartment/club where young kids can come and live to dance and shit. Anyways, the people that Moose pissed off were the guys from The House of Samurai. Yes, it’s Pirates versus Samurai’s in this movie.
What it all boils down to is that there’s a big battle to win 100.000 bucks, the warehouse of the Pirates is in trouble and they need the money, the Samurai are huge douches and then there’s personal stories. It’s the personal stories that keep the movie going, really. Moose and his girl, the new Tyler/Chase and the new Nora/Andie.

There’s a lot more at stake in this movie, which I liked, but … the horrible directing kind of negates it. The dancing is once again sublime, but overly present. Whilst the previous movies focused more on the Story and how dancing fits in to the story, this movie focusses more on the dancing itself. Like the preliminary Dance Battles are opened with something straight from an american TV show with a title card being edited on to the screen like it was a TV show. And then there was the dance sequence with Moose and his girl, who I later had found out was Tyler Gage’s little sister, that looked like it came straight out of a classic movie. You know, one where the music is playing without there being music where they were, them walking down a street with objects placed here and there that just so happen enable them to make a routine and people kindly helping them to make some music or continue with the scene. It was really weird and out of place.

You know the rule of moviemaking where you really shouldn’t reference a better movie in your movie if it isn’t as good. Yeah, I laughed when they put in the MSA Dance Crew of Step Up 2. Is it bad to say that Kido outshines every single supporting character in Step Up 3D? Don’t get me wrong, the other actors are pretty good in what they are doing. But NONE of them managed to stand out. At all. The Tyler and Nora duo of the day did as good a job as Andie and Chase, but they don’t come anywhere near the original duo. Moose on the other hand is still Moose, thank god, and manages to put out the best character of the movie.
Fun fact, Moose’s mom is played by Kathy Najimy, better known as Sister Mary Patrick from Sister Act.

Step Up 3D can be summarized as being entertaining. It’s the worst of a series but a good movie none the less. The directing is in dire need of improvement and there might be just one dance act too many, but overall I’d say it’s at least worth a watch.

7/10

  1. Intresting review, sadly hasn't seen this yet. Gonna rent it i guess. The first 2 movies were really cool and i hope that this one lives up to the other two even if it's worse. Thanks for the review. I'd suggest you to watch "Stomp the Yard" if you enjoyed "Step up", it has a really nice plot while being dance movie (not sure bout stomp the yard 2, haven't watched yet).
